Moritz
Moritz was Barcelona's first beer. Louis Moritz Trautmann, an Alsatian immigrant, founded the brewery in 1856, bringing European brewing traditions to the Catalan capital. What started as one man's craft has become a symbol of the city itself, inseparable from Barcelona's identity as Gaudí or the Ramblas.
The brewery draws water from the Font d'Or spring in Montseny-Guilleries, a natural resource that shapes the character of every beer they produce. The original factory building on Ronda de Sant Antoni, renovated by architect Jean Nouvel, now houses offices, a beer museum, a showcase brewery, and a tasting bar. It's a destination as much as a production facility.
Their alcohol-free range reflects genuine commitment rather than box-ticking. Aigua de Moritz, meaning Moritz Water, is a 0.0% lager with crystal-clear golden colour and Saaz hop aromatics. The name playfully suggests refreshment without pretension. Moritz 0,0 Torrada takes a different path: dark amber colour, abundant white foam, intense notes of caramel, liquorice and coffee with a roasted cereal finish. It proves that alcohol-free can handle complexity. The standard Moritz 0.0 delivers more body and flavour than typical AF lagers, with zero sugars.
The Mediterranean spirit runs through everything Moritz does. These are beers designed for long afternoons on terraces, for meals that stretch into evenings, for the sociable drinking culture that defines Spanish life. Removing the alcohol doesn't change that intention.
In the UK, Moritz is available through specialist retailers including Dry Drinker and Beer Hunter. A regional Spanish brewery with 170 years of history behind it, sitting some way apart from the mass-market names.
