Heineken
When one of the world's largest brewers decides to take alcohol-free seriously, the category takes notice. Heineken launched their 0.0 in 2017 after two years of secretive development, and it quickly became the benchmark against which mainstream AF lagers are measured.
The Dutch brewing giant traces its roots back to 1864, when Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought a brewery on an Amsterdam canal. The company built its reputation on consistency and quality, developing their signature A-yeast in 1886. That same attention to precision shaped their approach to alcohol-free brewing.
Rather than simply stripping alcohol from their flagship lager, Heineken's brewers developed 0.0 from scratch. The process uses vacuum distillation to gently remove alcohol while preserving the malty character and fruity notes that define the original. It's double-brewed with the same A-yeast, giving it a family resemblance without being a pale imitation.
The result is a clean, crisp lager with genuine body. The trademark green bottle is true to form: slightly sweet malt, a hint of fruit, and that familiar Heineken finish. It won't convert craft beer devotees, but it was never meant to. This is about giving mainstream lager drinkers a credible zero option.
Heineken's marketing muscle helped shift perceptions of alcohol-free beer from something medicinal to something aspirational. High-profile sponsorships and sampling campaigns introduced millions to the idea that not drinking could still feel like drinking proper beer.
You'll find Heineken 0.0 everywhere. Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda, Waitrose. Pubs and restaurants. Corner shops. It's become the default AF option in venues that only stock one. For many people making their first foray into alcohol-free, this is where they start. Whether they stay or move on to craft options, Heineken deserves credit for helping normalise the category.
