Budweiser
Budweiser needs no introduction. The American lager that became synonymous with mainstream beer started life in St Louis, Missouri, back in 1876. Adolphus Busch, a German immigrant who married into the Anheuser brewing family, created the recipe after touring European breweries and studying the pale lagers coming out of Bohemia. He borrowed the name from the Czech town of Budweis and built what would become America's first truly national beer brand.
The company pioneered refrigerated rail transport and pasteurisation to ship beer across the country before anyone else could manage it. That logistical innovation, as much as the beer itself, made Budweiser a household name. Today the brand sits within AB InBev, the Belgian-Brazilian drinks giant that acquired Anheuser-Busch in 2008.
Budweiser Zero represents the brand's current alcohol-free offering in the UK market. Launched in 2020, it replaced the earlier Prohibition Brew that arrived in 2017. The reformulation dropped the calorie count and sugar content significantly. At 0.0% ABV, it uses the same base ingredients as regular Budweiser: barley malt, rice, hops, and water.
Pale golden pour, high carbonation, clean and mild malt character. This is a light American lager doing exactly what light American lagers do, just without the alcohol. Accessibility is the point here, not complexity. Nobody picks up Budweiser Zero hoping for a revelation.
You will find Budweiser Zero in most major UK supermarkets including Morrisons, as well as through online retailers like Amazon. The brand's distribution muscle means availability is rarely an issue. As one of the first big mainstream lagers to offer a zero-alcohol option in the UK, Budweiser Zero helped normalise the category for drinkers who might never consider a craft alternative.
