Captain Morgan takes its name from Sir Henry Morgan, a seventeenth-century Welsh privateer who raided Spanish colonies across the Caribbean with tacit British backing. The rum brand launched in 1982 and now ranks among the three best-selling rums globally, shifting over eleven million cases each year across more than a hundred countries.

Diageo acquired Captain Morgan in 2001 as part of the Seagram spirits purchase. The brand's signature Spiced Rum, with its unmistakable pirate-emblazoned label, became a fixture in bars and student flats alike. Production happens in the US Virgin Islands for the American market, with the blend designed around Caribbean rum aged in charred oak.

In 2023, Captain Morgan joined Diageo's growing alcohol-free stable with the launch of Spiced Gold 0.0%. The development team reportedly worked through over four hundred recipes before landing on the final blend. The result aims to capture the caramel, molasses and vanilla warmth of the original, finished with the same lingering spice.

The 0.0% version works best as a mixer. Pour it long with cola and ice for the classic combination, or use it as the base for alcohol-free twists on rum cocktails. Neat, it holds up better than many spirit alternatives, though the sweetness comes through more prominently without alcohol to balance it.

You can find Captain Morgan Spiced Gold 0.0% in Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Waitrose, as well as through Diageo's own The Bar website. It sits at the more accessible end of the alcohol-free spirits shelf, priced to compete with everyday drinks rather than premium sipping alternatives.
