Avalon
Avalon comes from Trabanco, a family cidermaking business that has been pressing apples in Asturias since 1925. Founded by Emilio Trabanco in the village of Lavandera, the company is now in its fourth generation. Their orchards cover over 80 hectares of northern Spain's Cantabrian coast, growing the bitter, sweet and sour apple varieties that traditional Asturian sidra demands.
The brand name nods to the mythical island from Arthurian legend, Ynys Afallon, drawing a line between the Celtic cidermaking traditions of northwest Spain and those of Britain's West Country. It's a connection that makes sense: Asturias has been making sidra for centuries using methods that would look familiar to any Somerset orchardist.
Avalon Sidra Bajo is the alcohol-free expression of this heritage. Fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts in traditional chestnut casks, it goes through the same process as its full-strength siblings before the alcohol is removed. The result keeps the dry, tannic character that defines proper Spanish sidra rather than tasting like fizzy apple juice.
Expect green apple aromatics with a hint of spice, leading to a semi-dry palate with balanced acidity. The mouthfeel has more substance than most AF ciders, partly because Trabanco reintroduces lees after dealcoholisation. It's bottled unfiltered and is naturally gluten-free.
In the UK, you'll find Avalon through specialist retailers like Dry Drinker and Northern Wine and Beer. It sits at the premium end of the AF cider market, priced higher than supermarket options but justified by the craft production. There are very few AF ciders rooted in a genuine regional tradition this old.
