Ariel Vineyards has been making alcohol-removed wine since 1985, well before the current wave of interest in alcohol-free drinks. Founded by Jerry Lohr as part of his California winemaking operation, Ariel set out to prove that dealcoholised wine could actually taste like proper wine.

The brand sits within J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, a family-owned California winery with estate vineyards across Paso Robles, Monterey, and Napa Valley. Jerry Lohr brought seven decades of farming experience to the business, and the second generation now runs the show. J. Lohr's main focus remains full-strength wines, but Ariel carved out its niche early as their alcohol-removed offering.

The range keeps things simple: a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay, both made from estate-grown grapes on sustainably farmed land. The Cab delivers dark fruit character with soft tannins, while the Chardonnay offers tropical notes with a buttery finish. Both clock in under 0.5% ABV.

What distinguishes Ariel is the production method. The wines go through full fermentation and barrel ageing before the alcohol gets removed using a reverse osmosis process that J. Lohr developed themselves. The idea is to build genuine wine complexity first, then strip out the alcohol without stripping out the flavour. At around 45 calories per glass, the numbers look attractive for those watching their intake.

Ariel picked up recognition early, winning medals at competitions where they were judged blind against alcoholic wines. That kind of validation helped establish credibility in a category that often struggled to be taken seriously.

You can find Ariel at major American wine retailers and through the J. Lohr online shop. The brand recently refreshed its packaging with a lighter bottle and screwcap closure, signalling they are paying attention to where the market is heading. For American wine drinkers exploring alcohol-free options, Ariel represents a winery with genuine credentials and four decades of experience in dealcoholisation.
