Kingfisher traces its roots back to 1857, when five breweries across South India merged to form what would become United Breweries. The brand proper launched decades later and was revitalised in 1978 under Vijay Mallya's leadership. Today it holds the title of India's best-selling beer, with over 40% of the domestic market and distribution across 50 countries.

The brewing approach blends European pilsner traditions with formulations suited to warmer climates. Kingfisher Premium uses Czech Saaz hops, prized for their delicate, low-bitterness character. The production process involves over 200 quality checks, resulting in a golden lager with biscuity malt notes and a clean, crisp finish. In the UK, the beer has been brewed domestically for over three decades, maintaining the same recipe used since the brand's early days.

Kingfisher Zero arrived in late 2023 as the brand's first alcohol-free offering. Brewed to 0.0% ABV using natural ingredients, it aims to replicate the original's taste profile. The launch reflected broader market shifts, with the brand noting that most UK pubs now stock alcohol-free beer and roughly half of adults have tried low and no options.

The beer maintains strong associations with Indian cuisine in the UK, though the brand has worked to expand beyond that niche. You'll find Kingfisher in curry houses, certainly, but also in mainstream pubs, supermarkets, and convenience stores. The Zero variant follows this same distribution strategy, targeting consumers who want a familiar lager taste without alcohol.

Ownership has shifted over the years. Heineken acquired a controlling stake in United Breweries in 2021, bringing Kingfisher under the same corporate umbrella as other major international lager brands. For UK consumers, this means continued availability and the resources of a global drinks company backing the alcohol-free push.

Kingfisher Zero stands out in the AF lager space by offering a genuine connection to Indian brewing heritage rather than another European-style offering. In a category dominated by familiar European names, that distinction is worth noting.
