Kiuchi Brewery has been perfecting the art of fermentation since 1823. Founded by village headman Kiuchi Gihei in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, the brewery started life making sake from surplus rice tax stocks. Eight generations later, the family operation remains one of Japan's most respected craft producers.

Beer came to Kiuchi in 1996. When Japanese law changed to permit microbrewing, the brewery pivoted quickly, applying nearly two centuries of fermentation expertise to craft beer. Their Hitachino Nest range, recognisable by its owl logo, found international acclaim almost immediately, collecting awards across major beer competitions by the late 1990s.

Their approach blends European brewing techniques with Japanese traditions. The XH Hitachino Nest Beer matures in shochu casks. Their White Ale incorporates coriander, nutmeg and orange peel. This willingness to experiment while respecting craft fundamentals defines the brand.

The Non Ale represents Kiuchi's take on alcohol-free brewing. At 0.3% ABV, it features distinctly Japanese ingredients: yuzu citrus and ginger root balanced against a malt base. The result sits somewhere between beer and iced tea, with floral, honeyed aromatics and a refreshing finish. It demonstrates that their brewing creativity extends beyond full-strength offerings.

Hitachino Nest remains primarily a full-range craft brewery. Their portfolio spans sake, beer, wine and shochu, with the Non Ale sitting as a single alcohol-free option rather than a dedicated range. Distribution in the UK comes through specialist importers and premium retailers.
