Jever
Jever traces its roots to 1848, when innkeeper Diedrich König started selling bottled beer in the small Frisian town of Jever, near Germany's North Sea coast. The brewery changed hands several times over the following decades, but the real turning point came in 1934 when master brewer Ernst Böhme developed the recipe that would define the brand. He added extra hops to the region's exceptionally soft water, creating the distinctive bitter bite that sets Jever Pilsener apart from smoother German lagers.
The brand sits within Radeberger Gruppe, part of the Dr. Oetker family conglomerate, though it still brews in the original Jever location. The iconic green bottle and castle logo have remained constant since the 1980s, a visual shorthand for dry German pilsner.
Jever Fun arrived in 1991 as one of the earlier German alcohol-free pilsners. The brewing approach starts with a full fermentation before gently removing the alcohol at low temperature. This preserves the hoppy character that makes Jever distinctive. Sugar-free and low in calories, it appeals to drinkers watching their intake as much as those avoiding alcohol entirely.
The flavour profile stays true to the original: crisp, clean, and noticeably bitter. Where many alcohol-free lagers play it safe with muted hop character, Jever Fun leans into the dry, herbal finish that fans of the full-strength version expect. It is also certified vegan.
In the UK, Jever Fun appears through specialist German beer importers and online retailers rather than mainstream supermarkets. Niche availability suits it: this is a beer for people who specifically want a bitter, northern German pilsner, not a crowd-pleasing lager substitute.
