Desperados carved out a niche nobody knew existed. When French brewery Fischer created the world's first tequila-flavoured lager in 1995, the idea seemed almost absurd. Blend beer with agave spirit? Add citrus and serve it ice cold? It worked. The brand quickly found an audience among drinkers who wanted something different from standard lager.

Heineken acquired Fischer in 1996 and recognised what they had. The Dutch brewing giant provided global distribution muscle, taking Desperados from a French curiosity to a presence in over 60 countries. Production now happens across multiple Heineken-owned breweries, though the core recipe remains: lager aged in tequila barrels, blended with agave spirit and citrus notes.

The alcohol-free version, Desperados Virgin 0.0%, launched in France in 2020 before rolling out across Europe the following year. It strips out the alcohol while keeping the citrus and lemon character that defines the brand. The result sits somewhere between lager and flavoured beer, crisp and refreshing with a distinctive sweetness.

In the UK, the original Desperados is a familiar sight on supermarket shelves and in bars. The alcohol-free variant has been slower to arrive, currently available mainly through specialist online retailers rather than major supermarkets. It's a genuine gap in coverage for a brand with this much mainstream presence.

Desperados was never trying to replicate a traditional beer style. The tequila-lager hybrid was always its own thing, served ice cold at parties and festivals. The alcohol-free version fits that same occasion-led positioning, though how widely it'll land in the UK depends on whether supermarket buyers catch up.
