Greene King

The company runs two historic breweries. The Westgate Brewery in Bury St Edmunds dates from the 1860s and continues to produce Greene King's core ales. The Belhaven Brewery in Dunbar, Scotland, has been operating since 1719 and handles their Scottish portfolio. Between them, they produce some of the country's most recognisable cask ales, including Greene King IPA and Abbot Ale.

Old Speckled Hen stands as their flagship premium ale. Originally brewed by Morland in 1979 to mark the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in Abingdon, it came into the Greene King family when they acquired Morland in 1999. The beer has since become one of Britain's leading premium ale brands.

For alcohol-free drinkers, Greene King offers Old Speckled Hen Low Alcohol at 0.5% ABV. Brewed with the same malt and hop varieties as the original, it delivers that characteristic toffee and caramel sweetness with a fraction of the alcohol. You'll find it in bottles at supermarkets and in Greene King pubs.

Greene King has invested heavily in the low and no alcohol category across its pub estate. Their venues now stock a broad range of alcohol-free beers on draught and in bottles, including Lucky Saint, Heineken 0.0, Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%, and Guinness 0.0%. Sales of alcohol-free draught beer in Greene King pubs have grown dramatically, reflecting the broader shift in drinking habits.

The brewery's own alcohol-free output is modest: one line extension on Old Speckled Hen. But as a pub operator, Greene King has become one of the more reliable places to find a good alcohol-free pint on draught, and that matters more to most people than what's on the bottle.
