Asahi
Asahi traces its roots to 1889 when the Osaka Beer Brewing Company started producing European-style lager in Japan. The name means "morning sun" in Japanese, chosen to signal ambition and progress. Over a century later, Asahi holds the largest market share among Japanese brewers, and the brand has become synonymous with crisp, clean-finishing beer.
The company's defining moment came in 1987 with the launch of Asahi Super Dry. It introduced the world to a new style: highly attenuated, refreshingly dry, with minimal sweetness. The beer redefined Japanese brewing and sparked a global trend. Super Dry became Japan's best-selling beer, a position it still holds.
Asahi Super Dry 0.0% arrived in January 2023, first rolling out in the UK and Ireland before expanding to Australia, North America, France and New Zealand. The brewing approach takes the original Super Dry recipe through a de-alcoholisation process, aiming to preserve the signature dry character. The result is a pale golden lager with grassy, floral notes and that distinctive sharp finish. It works particularly well served ice cold alongside sushi, tempura or other Japanese cuisine.
The alcohol-free version sits within Asahi's broader corporate strategy targeting 20% of their portfolio being alcohol-free by the end of the decade. Given Asahi Group Holdings now owns an international portfolio of brands including Peroni, Grolsch, Pilsner Urquell and several UK craft breweries including Meantime and Fuller's, that commitment carries real weight.
Asahi Super Dry 0.0% is widely available in major UK supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury's and Waitrose, as well as in pubs and restaurants. It sits in the premium tier of the alcohol-free lager category, trading on the original's heritage and global recognition.
