Thatchers
William Thatcher started making cider at Myrtle Farm in Sandford, Somerset in 1904. Four generations later, the family still runs the operation, employing around 200 people. Martin Thatcher took over from his father John in 1992, continuing traditions while expanding the range.
Thatchers Gold, Haze, and Katy have earned devoted followings among cider drinkers who appreciate Somerset craft. The family ownership means decisions stay focused on quality rather than quarterly targets.
Thatchers Zero took two years to perfect. The golden, medium-dry alcohol-free cider blends traditional varieties like Dabinett and Somerset Redstreak for body with modern apples including Three Counties and Hastings for smoothness. That patience paid off: Thatchers Zero won Best No and Low Cider in the UK at the Imbibe Awards 2020.
Apple selection matters here. Somerset orchards provide fruit that gives West Country cider its distinctive character. Removing alcohol doesn't mean removing that identity. Thatchers Zero tastes like proper cider because it starts with proper ingredients.
UK availability is extensive. Supermarkets, pubs, and direct ordering from Myrtle Farm all provide access. The brand recognition that Gold built helps Zero find shelf space and tap handles.
A century of cider-making is a long time to learn what Somerset apples are capable of. Zero is where that knowledge ends up.
