Sobah
Dr Clinton Schultz, a Gamilaroi man and psychologist, created Sobah in 2016 after two years of sobriety left him frustrated by Australia's lack of decent adult non-alcoholic drinks. Together with his wife Lozen, he built Australia's first non-alcoholic craft beer company.
The name carries cultural meaning. 'Sobah' means 'place of sobriety', combining 'sober' with the suffix 'bah', which means 'place of' in many East-coast Indigenous languages. The brewery operates on Kombumerri country, the Gold Coast in Queensland.
What makes Sobah distinctive is the infusion of Australian native ingredients. Lemon Aspen Pilsner delivers citrus brightness from the rainforest fruit. Finger Lime Cerveza adds distinctive caviar-like pearls of flavour. Pepperberry IPA brings native spice heat. Davidson Plum GF Ale offers tart, earthy character with gluten-free credentials.
These aren't gimmicks. Bush tucker flavours connect the beers to Country while creating genuinely interesting drinks that you won't find anywhere else in the non-alcoholic category.
Purpose runs through the business. Sobah exists to raise positive awareness of First Nations culture, arts, language, and history, and the founders are vocal about sustainability and social equity. The brand challenges stereotypes about Indigenous Australians and alcohol without ever being preachy about it.
All beers are vegan-friendly and preservative-free. UK availability comes through specialist importers for those curious about Indigenous Australian craft brewing that does things differently.
